A Night at Girl’s Hall

As i passed the staircase to reach block B, room no. 220, i could feel a strong sense of weariness slowly grasping all over me, only to enter a room full of welcoming faces that could readily energize anyone. The nightlife here in the halls is full of colors, be that the caress someone gives while preparing their own meal in the kitchen, careful with the knife and very little shopping of goods and vegetables. Or the ever silent study room where everyone present have their eyes locked on pages and papers, the simple sharing of laughter of the two best friends and the frowning of that one friend who was trying to get some sleep.

With every step you take, you unfold a different shade of life. Don’t have the right outfit to wear the next day for a function? No worries at all! Forgot your toothpaste/face wash/convenience product? Already taken care of! Don’t know how to drape a saree for your presentation tomorrow? Problem solved! You name it, halls have gotten it all covered! Here, the sense of ‘giving’ outweighs the sense of getting anything in return, everytime.

After getting air-tight wrapped in my two sweaters and one hoodie, i buried myself underneath my blanket, still a victim of the sudden gusts of cold breeze. As i closed my eyes and forced myself to sleep, i couldn’t ignore sensing someone pulling over another warm piece of blanket over me without my ever mentioning the need for it. Perhaps it was never the blanket, but the ‘gesture’ that kept me so warm that night.

Hall life, it’s an experience incompatible with any other, it’s a journey of both struggle and merriment. It’s the beginning of somewhat living on your own, yet always having a shoulder to cry on. It’s a journey of discovering how well you manage to embrace life, yet never having to miss that one hand to reach out to when you’re drowning. It’s all about the person you slowly become, and no longer about the person you used to be. You don’t just bag experience when you leave this place, you take what it’s like to compromise, to give, to fight, and to love. The best part is, it’s never anything short of a story worth telling!
